Matthew trained at Mountview Theatre School, where he received a singing scholarship. He has experience in commercials, film, stage and television, with a bias towards playing the more unsavoury roles. He has played characters as diverse as policemen, thugs, fops, fascists and philosophers. His expressive features lend themselves well to both comedy and tragedy.

After a period away from acting to get married and have children, Matthew came back with a more lived-in look about him, but his boyish enthusiasm for the business remained. As Poe in a recent episode of Spooks, he was electrocuted, bound, gagged, blindfolded, manhandled and shot twice in the chest. Is there a better job in the world?

He is also an experienced improviser, performing long- and short-form improvisation in London venues. He writes screenplays and short stories and has directed in the theatre.
